About UT Gardens Knoxville

Recognized in 2013 as the official botanical gardens of the state of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee Gardens located in Knoxville, Jackson and Crossville are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Some 4,000 annuals, perennials, herbs, tropical plants, trees, shrubs, vegetables and ornamental grasses are evaluated each year. Both the Knoxville and Jackson gardens are TN Certified Arboreta. The gardens are open during all seasons and are free to the public. We are a non-profit organization that provides horticultural education through our gardens.

Farm stands, orchards and public gardens round out a trip to the garden center. Farm shops and stands sell produce, eggs, honey and often vegetable starts and hanging baskets in spring; orchards and u-pick farms open for strawberries, blueberries, peaches, apples and pumpkins in season; Christmas tree farms sell choose-and-cut and pre-cut trees and wreaths from late November. Botanical and public gardens, arboretums and conservatories are good places to see which plants thrive locally, and community gardens rent plots and share tools and knowledge.

Knoxville is in Tennessee, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Knoxville is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Tennessee's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

UT Gardens was a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours. I went in mid April and was concerned that I wouldn't see many flowers blooming, but I was amazed at how many flowers were in full bloom! I came on a weekday. There are eight free visitor parking spaces designated for parking for the garden during the work day. Otherwise you have to park elsewhere and pay to park. Be careful, because if you park in the main parking lot, that is reserved for students and you must have a parking pass or you will be ticketed anywhere from $25.00 to $33.00. They do have a public restroom in a building near the garden. They advise that you go on a weekend so the parking is better.

Nice gardens, especially in spring and summer. Limited free 2 hour visitor parking. Rose garden waterfall and fish is pretty. Some nice covered spots for picnic lunches. Can be noisy due to road traffic. Be sure to avoid football and basketball games though

Went 1/12, chilly and not really any foot traffic. The garden was obviously not in bloom, but we still loved every second of it. It’s so cool how they have the Native mound / along with multiple type of ethnic symbology around the gardens. We loved looking at the trees / palms / cacti. Parking is a row that is labeled for UT gardens, don’t park in a spot not labeled for that. Hopefully sometime we can come by when it’s in bloom, thank you UT for the beautiful garden(s)!

Very nice gardens. Easily walkable paths and most plant species have identification labels. Cost is free but donations accepted. Dedicated parking behind Vet School. Also has a very neat children's area with tunnels, hobbit mounds and shady seating areas. Plant selection is great and I can see they planned for extended blooming during the warm seasons.

What a super place to meet old friends living far apart. We ate lunch nearby and then spent a couple of hours wandering through the plants, trees, and flowers. Beautiful layout! Trails are accessible for all. There were so many places to sit and visit tucked within the gardens. I just loved it. And a children's play area. Loved the Bunny theme. A great place to enjoy a quick picnic lunch or wander for hours. Highly recommend.
